Sparta Praha Triumphs as Scandal-Hit Karviná Struggles in Return Match

Sparta Praha secured a 2-0 victory over MFK Karviná on April 5, 2026, in the 28th round of the Chance Liga. Although, the result at the Letenský stadium was overshadowed by the heavy cloud of a corruption and betting scandal currently engulfing the visiting side.

Goals from Sonne and Mercado sealed the win for the home side, marking Karviná’s first competitive appearance since a major corruption and betting scandal erupted within Czech football on March 24. The match served as a grueling return to action for a club now under intense scrutiny.

The atmosphere was particularly hostile, as Sparta supporters wasted no time in mocking the visitors. Before the 30-minute mark, fans unfurled a white banner that remained visible throughout the match, reading: “Welcome SKS farm – Wolf and Tvrdík, one crow to another.”

The turmoil stems from an investigation by the Ethics Committee of the Football Association of the Czech Republic (FAČR). According to reports, the committee has launched proceedings against Jan Wolf, the mayor of Karviná and a key figure in the club’s operations. Midfielder Samuel Šigut has had his activity suspended by the FAČR; he remains outside the primary squad and is currently following an individual training plan.

On the sidelines, assistant coach Pavel Němec stepped in for head coach Marek Jarolím, who was serving a suspension after accumulating four yellow cards. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Němec admitted that the off-field drama has taken a toll on the team.

“We won’t lie, the situation has affected us. We grasp what is being written about us and the case the club is involved in,” Němec stated. “We cannot influence it. All that remains for us is to concentrate solely on football and our play.”

Despite the external pressure, 23-year-old defender and midfielder Sebastian Boháč insisted that the players are attempting to maintain their composure. Boháč noted that the team tried to put the affair completely out of their minds to focus on their performance, adding that the locker room mood has not been as low as spectators might assume.

The defeat extends a dismal run for the Slezané, who have managed to secure only a single point in the league throughout the spring season. With the police summarizing the actions of the mayor and the FAČR continuing its probe, Karviná remains the only club in the top flight currently implicated in the scandal.

As Sparta Praha continues its push in the standings, Karviná must now navigate both a sporting crisis and a legal battle that threatens the stability of the club.
