A group of Counter-Strike fans launched a cryptocurrency under the name of Minh Le, too known as Gooseman, but the project quickly veered into what appeared to be a potential scam. The original creator of the game nearly became entangled in the fallout. Fortunately, Le recognized the issue in time, apologized and began issuing refunds to those affected.
While the situation appears to have been resolved, it’s worth understanding what transpired. In a video apology – notably without the apply of an ukulele – Gooseman also reflected on his departure from Valve, the company behind the hugely influential first-person shooter franchise.
Le co-created the Half-Life mod Counter-Strike with Jess Cliffe in 1999, which subsequently launched the popular series. Born in Vietnam in 1977, Le immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1979, arriving as refugees. He later attended Simon Fraser University from 1996 to 2001, earning a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Computing Science, with a focus on computer graphics.
Prior to his work on Counter-Strike, Le developed a mod for Quake called Navy SEALs in 1996, considered a precursor to the game that would craft him famous. Following his initial success, Le was employed by Valve for eight years. He then spent another eight years working on the multiplayer first-person shooter Tactical Intervention in Korea. Currently, he is a contractor working on the multiplayer survival game Rust.
Throughout his career, Le has taken on multiple roles in small-team game development, including programmer, modeler, and designer. His online nickname, Gooseman, originates from Shane Gooseman, a character in the 1980s cartoon series The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers. On June 6, 2025, Le announced via his X account that he was working on a new singleplayer/4 player co-op FPS titled Alpha Response.
The incident with the cryptocurrency and Le’s subsequent apology underscore the complexities of fan-driven projects and the importance of due diligence in the rapidly evolving world of digital assets. The enduring legacy of Counter-Strike continues to resonate within the gaming community, demonstrating the lasting impact of innovative game design.
