The China City Baseball League (CPB) is set to launch in January, and today officially unveiled its fifth team: the Shanghai Dragons. With all five city-based teams now public, reports of a team called “Shanghai Brothers,” rumored to be sponsored by the Chunghwa Group, have been confirmed as inaccurate. A league launch and draft event will be held tomorrow in Shenzhen.
The newly formed Chinese Professional Baseball (CPB) aims to achieve professional baseball status in China by 2028. The league will initially feature five teams. Recent controversy surrounding the “Shanghai Brothers” team name and logo – which closely resembled those of the Taiwanese Chunghwa Brothers – sparked strong backlash from Taiwanese fans. However, the Asian Baseball Federation has since clarified in a statement that the “Shanghai Brothers” are not among the five participating teams.
The CPB has been progressively announcing team names and logos since November 10th. Following the Changsha Wangwang Blackskins, Xiamen Dolphins, Shenzhen Blue Socks, and Fuzhou Sea Kings, the highly anticipated Shanghai team was officially revealed today. The team is sponsored by the Zhengda Group, established in 1921, and its logo features a dragon clutching a baseball in its claw. The team’s English name is “SHANGHAI DRAGONS.”
