Construction Crane Collapse Kills Two Workers Near Boston Harbor
Two construction workers died yesterday, October 24, 2024, when a crane operating from a barge collapsed on the Mystic River in Everett, Massachusetts.
One worker was pronounced dead at a local hospital, while the other died at the scene, according to Everett Police Chief Paul Strong. One of the victims required extraction from the wreckage. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of their families. The incident occurred at a redevelopment site formerly owned by ExxonMobile, where crews were dismantling a fuel terminal that opened in 1965.
“May they rest in eternal peace,” said Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria, describing the victims as “young men” employed by a private company contracted for the demolition work. The collapse has prompted an immediate work stoppage on the barge and a full investigation into the cause of the accident. The redevelopment project, spearheaded by Everett Landco, aims to transform the 7.2 million square foot marine terminal into a mixed-use space with industrial, manufacturing, office, and retail areas – a significant economic undertaking for the region. Everett Landco released a statement expressing their condolences and stating they are cooperating with public safety officials and contractors to determine what happened. The Everett Fire Department also praised the efforts of first responders, calling the rescue operation “complex” and highlighting the “tremendous job” done by all involved crews. The Mystic River is a vital waterway connecting to Boston Harbor, and disruptions to operations can impact regional shipping and commerce.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crane collapse, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
