In Uganda, on February 11, 2026, the Ministry of Health reported a case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in the Kyankwanzi district, located in the center of the country. The patient is a 21-year-old nurse who began experiencing headaches, fever, and loss of appetite on January 17, 2026. His condition progressed to include non-bloody diarrhea, vomiting, joint pain, conjunctivitis, jaundice, and nosebleeds and gum bleeding. The diagnosis of CCHF was confirmed by the Uganda Virus Research Institute. Here’s the first CCHF case reported in Uganda this year.

CCHF is endemic in Uganda, with sporadic human outbreaks primarily occurring in the country’s “cattle corridor” districts. These outbreaks are largely linked to infected ticks and livestock exposure. In 2025, the country reported 17 cases, including two deaths.

The emergence of this case highlights the ongoing risk of CCHF in certain regions and underscores the importance of vigilance and preventative measures. Africa CDC provided the source for this report.
