Cruzeiro demite Tite
Tite has been relieved of his duties as manager of Cruzeiro, the club announced Saturday. The decision comes amid a disappointing start to the Brazilian Serie A season, following a 3-3 draw with Vasco on Sunday.
Tite, who previously managed the Brazilian national team, was appointed in December to replace Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, who departed at the end of the last season. Jardim has since joined Flamengo, taking over from Filipe LuÃs.
Filipe LuÃs and Argentine manager Marcelo Gallardo, recently departed from River Plate, are reportedly being considered as potential replacements.
Portuguese coach Artur Jorge, who won the Libertadores with Botafogo in 2024, was likewise previously a candidate following Jardim’s exit. He currently manages Al-Rayyan in Qatar and a high release clause could prove to be a hurdle.
During his tenure this season, Tite led Cruzeiro to eight victories in 17 matches: against Tombense, Uberlândia, Betim, América-MG, URT, and Pouso Alegre (twice), as well as a 1-0 win over Atlético-MG to claim the Campeonato Mineiro title. He suffered defeats to Pouso Alegre, Democrata GV, and Atlético-MG in the Campeonato Mineiro.
Cruzeiro’s struggles in the Brazilian Serie A were particularly concerning, as they failed to secure a win in their first six league matches. They suffered a 4-0 defeat to Botafogo in their season opener and subsequently lost 2-1 to Coritiba at the Mineirão, drawing jeers from the home crowd.
A 2-2 draw against Mirassol left the team in the relegation zone. They then drew 1-1 with Corinthians at the Mineirão after taking an early lead, followed by a 2-0 loss to Flamengo and the recent 3-3 draw with Vasco. Tite recorded eight wins, two draws, and seven losses while managing Cruzeiro.
