Cuban Mechanic Converts Fiat 126p to Run on Wood – Fuel Solution

A Cuban mechanic has devised a workaround to U.S. Oil sanctions by converting a 1980 Polish Fiat 126p to run on charcoal. The move comes as a response to fuel shortages, with charcoal emerging as a more affordable alternative, according to Reuters.

Juan Carlos Pino created the vehicle in his workshop in Aguacate, quickly becoming a local sensation. Residents have been captivated by the mechanic’s ingenuity and are eager to photograph the unique automobile.

Pino’s “Maluch,” as the Fiat 126p is known, was constructed entirely from used parts and salvaged materials. Charcoal is burned in a modified propane tank, sealed with a transformer cover, and the filtration system is ingeniously crafted from a milk jug filled with traditional clothing.

In Cuba, where access to fuel is rationed, such resourceful solutions are proving invaluable. Black market gasoline prices currently reach as high as $8 per liter, making charcoal a compelling alternative for those seeking to circumvent the limitations of the current energy landscape.

Pino, who previously built a cow-milking machine from a motorcycle, drew inspiration from his uncle and the open-source technology promoted by Edmundo Ramos, an Argentinian innovator. The innovative approach has garnered attention from individuals across various sectors, including owners of ice cream shops and stores, who are also exploring alternative energy sources.
