An Iranian-made drone struck a Royal Air Force base in Cyprus on Monday, March 2, 2026, marking the first attack on European soil linked to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The incident raises concerns about the potential for wider regional instability as tensions continue to rise between Iran, the United States and Israel.

According to Cypriot government officials, two drones approaching RAF Akrotiri were neutralized on Monday, and those downed drones were of Iranian manufacture, likely launched from Lebanon by Hezbollah. This followed an earlier incident overnight Sunday into Monday, when a drone also originating from Lebanon struck a runway at the same base, causing what officials described as “limited” damage.

The British Ministry of Defence confirmed the attack on Sunday evening, stating that a drone had hit the base. This marks the first incident connected to the current Middle East conflict to occur in Europe.

British Defence Minister John Healey stated earlier that ballistic missiles had been fired toward Cyprus around midnight, but there were no reported casualties.

Cypriot government spokesperson Constantinos Letymbiotis confirmed the incident, stating a “drone without a pilot caused limited damage” to the base. He added that the incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday.

“Information received from various channels indicates that this was a drone attack,” Letymbiotis said, adding that details regarding the type of drone, its origin, and the extent of the damage were still being determined.

RAF Akrotiri serves as the United Kingdom’s primary air base for operations in the Middle East and has been used in recent years for missions against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, as well as strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. The base is located on British sovereign territory.

Cypriot authorities have increased security in the area and are coordinating with the United Kingdom and its two military bases on the island to monitor the situation.

Keir Starmer Grants U.S. Access to British Bases

The drone attack came shortly after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the United Kingdom had authorized the United States to leverage its bases, at Washington’s request.

Starmer clarified that the UK would not participate directly in strikes against Iran, but agreed to allow the U.S. To utilize British bases to target Iranian missiles and launch sites.

“The United States asked for permission to use British bases for this specific, limited, defensive purpose, and we have taken the decision to grant that request in order to prevent Iran from firing missiles into the region, thereby killing innocent civilians,” Starmer said.

Earlier on Saturday, Starmer, along with his counterparts from the E3 group of countries (Germany, France, and the United Kingdom), condemned Iran’s attacks on neighboring countries and called on Tehran to cease its military actions and resume negotiations.

In a joint statement with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, they stated: “We strongly condemn Iran’s attacks on countries in the region.”

On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested that his country’s military units were operating independently of central government control, following questioning about attacks against Arab Gulf states that had previously served as mediators for Tehran.

“In fact, our military units are now independent and somewhat isolated, and they are acting based on instructions – you know, general instructions – that are given to them in advance,” Araghchi said on a Middle Eastern television channel.

Iran has launched attacks against Qatar, which has negotiated with Tehran and shares a significant offshore natural gas field in the Persian Gulf with the Islamic Republic.

It has also targeted the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman, which served as intermediaries in recent nuclear negotiations with the United States.

The attacks by Tehran against Gulf states have already resulted in casualties, while the United States and Israel continue to bombard targets within Iran, dropping massive bombs on its ballistic missile sites and destroying warships as part of an intensifying military campaign.
