Czech Republic Braces for Volatile Weather Swing

After a brief respite with spring-like temperatures, the Czech Republic is preparing for a return to colder conditions, with the possibility of snow and icy conditions. The fluctuating weather pattern highlights the increasing unpredictability of seasonal transitions in Central Europe.

Meteorologists initially reported a warming trend bringing temperatures reminiscent of spring. Although, this mild period will be short-lived, as a cold front is expected to move in over the weekend. According to reports, temperatures will dip below freezing in many areas.

The change will start on Saturday, with snow expected in areas above 500 meters, particularly in northern Bohemia and eastern parts of the country. As the day progresses, snowfall will likely be confined to higher elevations above 900 meters. Daytime temperatures on Saturday are forecast to reach 4 to 9 °C (39 to 48 °F), though the northeast of the Czech Republic, as well as most of Moravia and Silesia, will remain colder, with highs between -1 and 4 °C (30 to 39 °F). Mountainous regions will hover around 0 °C (32 °F). Authorities are warning of potential black ice formation due to freezing precipitation.

Sunday will see predominantly cloudy skies and rain developing from the west. In Moravia, the rain may have a freezing character. Snowfall will be limited to the north and northeast at altitudes above 1,200 meters. Morning fog is also possible. Overnight temperatures will fall to between 4 and 0 °C (39 to 32 °F) and as low as -2 °C (28 °F) in Moravia. Daytime highs will reach 7 to 12 °C (45 to 54 °F), while Moravia will remain around 4 °C (39 °F).

Monday is expected to be even warmer, with overnight lows between 7 and 2 °C (45 to 36 °F) and daytime highs of 9 to 13 °C (48 to 55 °F) across the republic. However, this warmer spell will be brief, as meteorologists are forecasting another significant temperature drop in the coming days. Further details on the changing conditions are available here.

Long-range forecasts indicate continued variability in the weather, with significant temperature fluctuations expected throughout the spring season. Meteorologists have issued a less optimistic outlook for the season.

A separate report from April 2, 2025, warned of a dramatic shift in weather, with arctic air bringing sub-freezing temperatures and snow. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) cautioned about the potential impact on blossoming fruit trees.

Earlier reports indicated a period of sunny weather with temperatures reaching up to 20 °C (68 °F) before the cold front arrived. More information on the previous warming trend can be found here. Another report indicated the end of winter and the arrival of spring weather. Temperature maps suggest further warming in the coming week.
