Jakarta Barat Intensifies Dengue Fever Prevention Efforts
Health officials in West Jakarta are ramping up efforts to control dengue fever cases, a mosquito-borne illness that poses a significant public health challenge in the region. The initiatives include widespread community engagement and targeted interventions to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
As of October 16, 2025, West Jakarta had recorded 2,548 dengue fever cases, with an incidence rate of 97.4 per 100,000 residents – the highest in the capital city. The peak of cases occurred in May 2025, with 362 reported, a surge attributed to humid weather and inadequate drainage systems. Effective dengue control requires a collaborative approach between academic institutions and the community, according to health leaders.
The West Jakarta Health Office is leading the “1 House 1 Jumantik” movement, empowering households to routinely monitor and eliminate mosquito larvae. A jumantik is a volunteer mosquito monitor. This program is part of the implementation of the National Dengue Control Strategy 2021-2025 from the Indonesian Ministry of Health.
“We are intensifying the 1 House 1 Jumantik movement to empower the community as the frontline of defense,” said dr. Diah Iskandar, Head of the West Jakarta Health Office. “Each jumantik checks for mosquito breeding sites in households, carries out selective larviciding, and conducts focused fogging in high-risk areas.”
Alongside the jumantik program, the 3M Plus strategy – draining water containers, covering storage, recycling used items, and applying larvicides – is being widely implemented to eliminate mosquito larvae in standing water.
Poltekkes Kemenkes Jakarta Barat (Jakarta Barat Health Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health) is also contributing to the effort by training 200 students from the Environmental Health Department to educate communities about the 3M Plus approach in 50 priority RW (neighborhood) areas. This proactive approach aims to move beyond reactive measures and establish sustainable dengue prevention strategies.
Recent reports indicate ongoing efforts to combat dengue fever in specific areas, such as the PE PSN (Pemberantasan Sarang Nyamuk – Mosquito Larvae Eradication) activity conducted by the Jelambar 1 Public Health Center on Jl. Satria IV RW 04.
