KNVB Clears Dean James and Go Ahead Eagles in ‘Passportgate’ Eligibility Ruling
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has officially closed its investigation into the eligibility of defender Dean James, ruling that neither the player nor his club, Go Ahead Eagles, will face disciplinary sanctions. The decision, announced on April 8, 2026, brings a resolution to the controversy widely known as “Passportgate.”

The dispute arose after James swapped his Dutch nationality for Indonesian citizenship in March 2025. Following a 6-0 victory for Go Ahead Eagles over NAC Breda, the Breda-based club requested that the match be declared void, arguing that James was no longer eligible to play under Dutch law due to his change in nationality. This legal ambiguity left Dean James hit with unsettling news as the KNVB delved into the specifics of his passport status.
In a press release, the KNVB’s independent professional football prosecutor stated that the association would not take action, noting that it is not the prosecutor’s role to determine a person’s nationality. While the IND confirmed that James had indeed lost his Dutch citizenship and had been ineligible to play since March 2025, the prosecutor determined that neither the player nor the club were aware of the automatic consequences resulting from the change in nationality. Dean James and Go Ahead Eagles have been cleared of legal charges.
The “Passportgate” scandal created widespread unrest across the Eredivisie, affecting multiple players. Tjaronn Chery of NEC and Etiënne Vaessen of FC Groningen were both barred from training during the turmoil. While Vaessen has since secured his EU sticker and was eligible for FC Groningen’s 0-2 loss against Telstar, the ruling on James provides similar clarity for his squad. The investigation into the KNVB prosecutor’s investigation ensures that Go Ahead Eagles can now field both James and Richonell Margaret in their match this coming Saturday.
The situation has as well drawn attention to broader administrative issues, with reports surfacing that Fardy Bachdim has been mentioned in connection to the Indonesian national team’s passport issues. The scandal has prompted reflections on PSSI’s internal workings, as PSM Makassar legends have commented on the complexities of the passport scandal and the PSSI’s role in player naturalization.
With the KNVB now expecting all clubs to be fully aware of nationality regulations moving forward, the “Passportgate” saga has effectively fizzled out, allowing the focus to return to the pitch for the upcoming matchday.
