Dejan Stankovic has returned to manage Crvena zvezda, the Belgrade club announced Monday. The move comes after Vladan Milojevic stepped down as head coach on Sunday.
Stankovic, 47, previously led Crvena zvezda from December 2019, securing three Serbian SuperLiga titles and two Serbian Cups during his tenure. He also guided the team to European competition, reaching the round of 32 and then the round of 16 in the Europa League.
Before returning to Belgrade, Stankovic had a stint with Sampdoria in 2022 and then managed Ferencváros, where he won the Hungarian league title and reached the Hungarian Cup final in 2023. However, he departed Ferencváros the day after the cup final after agreeing to terms with Spartak Moscow.
His time with Spartak Moscow saw him lead the team to a fourth-place finish in his first season. However, he parted ways with the club in November after a mutual agreement, with Spartak sitting sixth in the Russian Premier League with a record of seven wins and four losses in 15 matches, eight points behind league-leading FK Krasnodar. His tenure was also marked by multiple red cards stemming from heated exchanges with referees.
Currently, Crvena zvezda holds 45 points after 20 rounds of the Serbian SuperLiga, placing them second in the standings, just one point behind league leader Partizan Beograd. This return comes at a crucial point in the season as Crvena zvezda aims to defend its title and continue its strong presence in Serbian football.
