Diane Warren has extended her record as the artist with the most Oscar nominations without a win. Her latest bid for an Academy Award, for the song “Dear Me” featured in the documentary Diane Warren: Relentless and performed by Kesha, was unsuccessful, with the award going to “Golden” from Kpop Demon Hunters.
This year’s loss brings Warren’s total to 17 nominations, surpassing a previous tie with sound technician Greg P. Russell, who too held sixteen unsuccessful nominations. Her first nomination dates back to 1987 for “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from the film Mannequin.
Throughout her career, Warren has penned numerous other songs nominated for Oscars, including “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from Armageddon, “How Do I Live” from Con Air and “There You’ll Be” from Pearl Harbor. The prolific songwriter received an honorary Oscar in 2022 recognizing her contributions to music in film, a testament to her consistent impact on cinematic soundtracks.
Whereas she hasn’t secured a competitive win, Warren’s continued recognition highlights the enduring influence of original music in storytelling. The ongoing pursuit of an Oscar underscores the importance of film scoring and songwriting as integral components of the moviegoing experience, and the increasing sophistication of audio-visual technology that delivers these experiences to audiences worldwide.
Despite the repeated snubs, Warren has indicated she will continue to create music for film.
