Challenge League Battles for Promotion to Swiss Super League
The Challenge League, the second tier of Swiss professional football, is currently underway with ten teams vying for promotion to the Super League. The league, officially known as the Dieci Challenge League due to sponsorship, features a round-robin format where each team plays every opponent four times – twice at home and twice away – over 36 rounds spanning from late July to May, with a winter break from mid-December to early February.
Currently, the league is comprised of nine Swiss teams and one club from Liechtenstein. The stakes are high as the Challenge League champion earns direct promotion to the Super League, although the team finishing at the bottom of the table faces relegation to the Promotion League.
Adding another layer of competition, the team that secures second place in the Challenge League will enter a promotion play-off against the ninth-placed team from the Super League. This two-legged tie, played at both home and away venues, will determine the final spot in the succeeding tournament.
Thun were crowned champions for the 2024–25 season. The league’s structure ensures a competitive race for both the top spot and to avoid the drop, making each match crucial as teams battle for their place in Swiss football’s hierarchy. More information about the league can be found on the official Challenge League website.
