Hundreds of Dinosaur Eggs Unearthed in Southern France Reveal Life 75 Million Years Ago
A remarkable discovery in southern France has yielded hundreds of dinosaur eggs, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of these prehistoric creatures approximately 75 million years ago. The find, made by paleontologists from Musée-Parc des Dinosaures, is located in the Mèze region, now considered one of the most important fossil sites in Europe.
The site contains a large collection of dinosaur eggs dating back to the Late Cretaceous period. Researchers believe the area was once a major dinosaur breeding ground. This discovery provides valuable insights into the reproductive behavior of dinosaurs and the environment they inhabited, information that can help scientists better understand the evolution of these ancient reptiles.
The eggs are not all from a single species, but rather represent several different types of dinosaurs that likely coexisted in the region. Analysis of the eggshell structure revealed distinct characteristics, indicating the presence of multiple species. Scientists used microscopic techniques to differentiate the eggs based on their shape, size, and crystal structure.
“The analysis of the shells allows us to distinguish several species,” said Alain Cabot, a paleontologist involved in the study.
The findings support the theory that the area was once an important habitat for a diverse range of herbivorous dinosaurs. The eggs are estimated to be between 70 and 75 million years old, from a time when dinosaurs still dominated Earth before their extinction. More than 100 eggs have been observed in recent weeks as the team explored a fossil-rich layer, with the layer extending beyond the current excavation site.
Researchers have tentatively linked the discovery to Titanosaurus, Ankylosaurus, theropods, and ornithopods, based on the characteristics of the fossilized eggs. The Musée-Parc des Dinosaures de Mèze announced the discovery, highlighting its significance for understanding dinosaur reproduction and the ancient ecosystem.
