DNA Building Blocks Found on Asteroid Ryugu | Space Discovery

Scientists have discovered all the key components necessary for the formation of DNA within a space rock currently being studied. The finding suggests the fundamental building blocks of life may be more common throughout the universe than previously thought.

Significant Discovery Made on Asteroid Ryugu

Researchers examining samples from the approximately 900-meter-wide asteroid Ryugu have identified all five nucleobases that form the building blocks of DNA and RNA. The study was published in the journal Nature Astronomy. This discovery adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting the chemical precursors to life could have formed in space and been delivered to Earth.

Discovery Doesn’t Indicate Life on Asteroid

“This finding does not mean that life exists on the asteroid,” emphasized Toshiki Koga, the lead author of the research. “However, it does suggest that these types of celestial bodies are capable of producing the molecules necessary for the formation of life.”

Similar Findings Reported Previously

A similar discovery was made in 2023 on the asteroid Bennu. Experts believe this reinforces the idea that the fundamental components of life may be widespread throughout the Solar System. The repeated detection of these building blocks across different asteroids strengthens the hypothesis that they were delivered to Earth from space, potentially seeding the planet with the ingredients for life.
