The Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Dordrecht is postponing some surgeries due to a surge in influenza cases, a hospital spokesperson confirmed to Rijnmond.
The postponements are affecting the hospital’s locations in Dordrecht and Zwijndrecht. Urgent procedures, including those for children and oncology patients, will continue as scheduled.
Both locations are experiencing a high volume of patients presenting with flu symptoms. The situation is further complicated by delays in discharging patients who require placement in facilities such as nursing homes or rehabilitation centers, adding strain to available resources. This confluence of factors is creating significant pressure on the healthcare system.
Hospital officials anticipate that the number of influenza-related cases will continue to rise, particularly with the ongoing holiday season and the upcoming Carnival celebrations on Friday. Increased social gatherings during these times often contribute to the spread of respiratory viruses.
National data from general practitioners regarding influenza cases is expected to be released later today. If the figures exceed a predetermined threshold, a national influenza epidemic will be officially declared. The threshold was surpassed last week, but health authorities require two consecutive weeks above the limit to formally recognize an epidemic.
