A leading Indonesian pediatrician has been dismissed from his position by the country’s Health Minister, sparking a controversy over the independence of medical professional organizations. Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, chair of the Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI), announced his termination on Sunday, February 15, 2026, via social media.

“Finally, I was fired by Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin,” Dr. Piprim wrote in the post.

Dr. Piprim also expressed his apologies to his students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, and his patients at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. He alluded to his dismissal being connected to his critical stance toward the Minister and his opposition to a medical board structure he believes lacks independence.

“I was only carrying out the mandate of the national congress in Semarang, which stated that the Indonesian pediatric science college must remain independent. We fought for the independence of the college and opposed it being under the Minister of Health,” Dr. Piprim continued.

According to a document received by detikcom, the dismissal – described as “honorable discharge not requested” – was issued on February 2, 2026, and signed by Minister Budi G Sadikin. The document cites disciplinary violations as the reason for Dr. Piprim’s termination.

Prior to his dismissal, Dr. Piprim was unexpectedly transferred from RSCM to Fatmawati Hospital in April 2025, a move he described as lacking transparency.

Explanation from Fatmawati Hospital

Wahyu Widodo, Director of Fatmawati Hospital, stated that Dr. Piprim’s termination as a Civil Servant (ASN) was solely due to 28 consecutive days of absence. According to Widodo, Dr. Piprim was aware of the risk of losing his ASN status after repeatedly failing to respond to requests from Fatmawati Hospital regarding his continued practice.

Widodo acknowledged that Dr. Piprim continued to protest the transfer, which he considered improper. After multiple summons and warnings, Dr. Piprim did not resume practicing at Fatmawati Hospital, ultimately leading to his dismissal in accordance with regulations governing Civil Servant discipline.

“We also received a letter from RSCM stating that his salary was no longer being processed through RSCM, but through Fatmawati Hospital. Legally, he had officially become an employee of Fatmawati, legally speaking,” Widodo explained.

Timeline of Dr. Piprim’s Termination

The following details the timeline leading to Dr. Piprim’s dismissal:

October 29, 2025:

A letter from the Director of Fatmawati Hospital, dated October 14, 2025, stated that Dr. Piprim had been absent from work and had not reported for duty continuously since April 2025.

August 25, 2025:

Two summons were issued to Dr. Piprim, dated September 3, 2025, but he did not attend either summons.

September 15, 2025:

The Director of Fatmawati Hospital issued a written reprimand as disciplinary action for violating Government Regulation Number 94 of 2021 concerning Civil Servant Discipline, specifically for failing to carry out official duties with dedication, honesty, awareness, and responsibility, and for not adhering to working hours.

September 16, 2025:

Dr. Piprim again failed to report to work without a valid reason, and was summoned by the Examination Team on September 16, 2025. He did not attend the first summons and was summoned again with a second summons on September 25, 2025, to appear before the examination team on October 8, 2025, which he did attend.

October 8, 2025:

Based on the minutes of the examination, Dr. Piprim was found to have actively resisted, acknowledging the potential consequences, including dismissal, and acting consciously.

“Based on the above, it has been proven that he committed a serious disciplinary violation, namely consistently failing to report to work without a valid reason at Fatmawati Hospital since March 26, 2025, regarding the transfer of Civil Servants within the Ministry of Health,” Widodo concluded.

Despite Dr. Piprim filing a lawsuit with the Jakarta State Administrative Court to postpone the implementation of the decision, he was instructed to comply with the decision until a ruling was issued by the court.
