A woman is in police custody after a fire broke out at a home in Drachten, Netherlands, on Sunday evening, drawing a large response from emergency services. The incident underscores the potential for arson investigations following residential fires.
Firefighters were first called to the Robijnekamp address around 9:42 p.m. Local time, according to reports. The fire quickly escalated, prompting a call for additional crews from neighboring towns including Beetsterzwaag, Ureterp, and Burgum. A drone team and a water tanker from Heerenveen were also dispatched to assist.
Upon arrival, first responders found the blaze already well underway. Though the fire was eventually contained, it caused significant smoke damage. The fire reportedly began on an upper floor of the residence.
The resident was home at the time of the fire and was later taken into custody by police on suspicion of arson. Her dog was taken in by the Dierenambulance Fryslân (Friesland Animal Ambulance).
Several neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution. It remains unclear when residents of those properties will be allowed to return, according to fire officials. The incident drew a crowd of onlookers from the surrounding area.
