Square Enix will integrate Google’s Gemini AI into its online role-playing game, Dragon Quest X, offering players in-game conversational assistance and guidance. The collaboration marks a significant step in applying generative AI to enhance player experiences within established gaming worlds.
The new feature will take the form of an interactive character, affectionately named Oshaberi Slimey, capable of responding to player questions and providing helpful hints, such as suggesting the next destination or offering support during challenging gameplay moments. Gemini will analyze on-screen activity and proactively offer assistance, like congratulating players on defeating difficult enemies or discovering rare items.
Square Enix is currently conducting a closed beta test, with applications open through March 30, to refine the integration of Gemini. Currently, the test is limited to players in Japan, the sole region where Dragon Quest X is officially available.
An Intriguing Experiment
Fourteen years after the initial launch of Dragon Quest X, Square Enix’s announcement aims to revitalize player engagement and make the game more accessible to newcomers. The integration of AI is intended to lower the barrier to entry for new players and provide a more welcoming experience.
Takashi Anzai, responsible for the game’s development and management, explained that the goal is to provide new players with “a companion capable of guiding them without making them feel lost or alone.” This move highlights the potential of AI to personalize and enhance the gaming experience, particularly in long-running online titles.
The implications of this technology are significant, especially regarding the creation of truly believable non-player characters (NPCs) with detailed backgrounds and the ability to engage in dynamic, AI-driven conversations.
