Intoxicated Grandfather Seriously Injures 8-Year-Vintage Boy in Austria Tractor Accident
THÖRL, Austria — A young boy is recovering in a Graz hospital after a devastating accident involving a tractor and an intoxicated relative in the town of Thörl.
According to the Styria State Police Directorate, the incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. On Sunday, April 5, 2026. A 61-year-old local man was working near his residence with a parked tractor when he lowered a hydraulic tipping bucket to the ground.
The man’s 8-year-old grandson was positioned between the vehicle and the tipping bucket at the moment of the accident. The child’s left hand—specifically the index and middle fingers—became trapped in the machinery’s locking mechanism, resulting in severe injuries.
Following initial emergency care at the scene, the boy was airlifted by the C14 rescue helicopter to the pediatric surgery department at LKH Graz, where he was admitted as an inpatient. Officials have not released further details regarding the child’s current condition.
The investigation revealed a critical factor in the accident: the grandfather was heavily impaired. A breathalyzer test administered by police confirmed the 61-year-old was suffering from “severe alcoholization” while operating the heavy machinery.
The incident has led to immediate legal ramifications for the man. Once the police conclude their findings, he will be reported to the Leoben public prosecutor’s office on suspicion of negligent bodily harm. A report has been filed with the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district administration.
This tragedy underscores the extreme danger of operating agricultural equipment while under the influence, particularly in residential areas where children may be present.
