Dubai Residents Report Drone Incidents Amid Regional Tensions
Dubai residents experienced a series of unsettling incidents on March 12 and 13 involving drones, as regional tensions continue to rise following recent exchanges between Iran and U.S.-Israeli forces. The incidents, which included debris falling on buildings, have prompted evacuations but have not resulted in any reported injuries. The events underscore the increasing vulnerability of civilian areas in the Gulf region.
On March 12, a drone crashed into a building in the Creek Harbour area around 2:00 a.m., prompting the evacuation of residents, according to reports. Luciana Montanha, a 37-year-old economist who lives near Creek Harbour, described being awakened by a loud noise. “I heard an explosion, loud enough to wake me up, even being inside an apartment with extremely efficient noise-reducing windows,” she said. “I looked at my phone and saw many messages in the neighborhood group: everyone had woken up to the same sound. A few minutes later we heard another. After about three minutes, many sirens were already sounding. We went down to the parking lot. Unfortunately, the Address hotel building was hit by a drone.”
Montanha noted that shortly after the initial sounds, fighter jets began patrolling the area, which she found reassuring. “Of course, the situation is serious, but I experience safe,” she explained. “I feel that we will be informed when threats arise and that, if we follow the guidelines, it is possible to mitigate the risks.”
Despite the incidents, Montanha said her daily routine remains largely unchanged. “I continue to go to the office and exercise outdoors. Now I pay attention to civil defense messages to avoid exposure when danger is indicated.”
Authorities reported two additional incidents on March 12. Debris from an intercepted aerial object impacted the facade of a building on Sheikh Zayed Road, and a minor drone accident occurred in the Al Bada’a area.
The United Arab Emirates is among the Gulf states that have been targeted by Iranian forces in retaliatory attacks against U.S. Assets, following operations by the United States and Israel against Tehran. The recent incidents highlight the potential for escalation and the challenges of maintaining aviation security in the region.
