FDP Leader Christian Dürr Vows to Remain at Helm Despite Election Setback

Berlin – Christian Dürr intends to continue leading the Free Democratic Party (FDP) despite a disappointing result in the Baden-Württemberg state election on March 9, 2026. The FDP failed to surpass the 5% threshold needed to secure representation in the state legislature, prompting some criticism within the party.

“The FDP must renew itself. I wish to drive this renewal forward,” Dürr said in Berlin. “It was clear to us that this would be a challenging and rocky road.” He also affirmed that Secretary General Nicole Büttner would remain in her position.

Dürr explained that, following the federal election, the FDP essentially started from scratch with the goal of re-establishing itself as a noticeable reform force in Germany. “Trust, I am aware, is not regained overnight,” he stated. He likened the process of rebuilding trust to “a marathon.”

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Dürr conceded, “We, as the FDP, are not yet at the point where we can successfully contest elections.” The outcome in Baden-Württemberg underscores the work that remains to be done to regain voter confidence.

Despite the setback, Dürr expressed confidence that a political voice is needed in Germany for those seeking change “and wanting to make things happen.” He suggested that the current governing parties in Berlin do not adequately represent this desire for change, and predicted a similar sentiment may emerge in Stuttgart. “The FDP must stand for a radically different policy than the CDU, SPD, and Greens do.”
