Dutch writing duo Erik Betten and Corien Feenstra, who collaborate under the pen name Rifka Faber, are leveraging their combined expertise to craft compelling medical thrillers. Their approach, detailed in a recent discussion, centers on intensive collaboration, thorough research, and shared inspiration to develop intricate plots rooted in the medical field.

The pair’s unique methodology blends credible medical details with suspenseful storytelling, a combination they believe is key to their narratives. This focus on realism is particularly evident in their latest work, ‘Fatale oplossing’ (Fatal Solution), which introduces readers to Chris Griffioen, an ambitious and principled medical assistant. The novel, set to release on January 15th, explores a scenario where Griffioen suspects foul play after a patient dies unexpectedly post-surgery – a situation that escalates as more patients succumb under similar, seemingly impossible circumstances. This type of detailed medical setting is becoming increasingly popular as readers seek authenticity in the thriller genre.

Betten, a seasoned author with a background in both fiction and non-fiction, previously won the Bookspot Schaduwprijs for his debut thriller, ‘Quarantaine’. Feenstra brings years of practical experience as a registered nurse, having worked in numerous large hospitals throughout the Netherlands. Their combined knowledge forms the foundation of ‘Fatale oplossing’, aiming to deliver a high-stakes narrative grounded in a realistic healthcare environment.

As Griffioen investigates, she faces resistance from hospital administration and ultimately finds her colleague and friend, Anne, suspended. The story follows Griffioen’s determination to uncover the truth, despite warnings, and the escalating danger as she gets closer to the source of the mysterious deaths. The authors describe their creative process as often unfolding around the kitchen table, with Betten and Feenstra brainstorming and developing the story together, sometimes with Betten playfully referred to as “the third child” at the table. This collaborative approach highlights a growing trend in authorship, where shared perspectives and expertise can lead to richer, more nuanced narratives.

‘Fatale oplossing’ is available for purchase in bookstores starting January 15th. More information about the authors and their work can be found here.

The duo also discussed their broader approach to writing thrillers, noting that they often draw inspiration from their own anxieties. A separate report from March 1, 2026, highlights this dynamic, referencing Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, who have enjoyed success as the writing team Nicci French for 25 years.
