“We feel at home here”
A family traded life in Limburg for a new adventure on the Costa Blanca, as viewers saw on a recent television program. In the Spanish town of L’Alfàs del Pi, they purchased a large villa with plans to develop an accessible guest house for families with children and adults requiring intensive care.
“Many guests also purchase care services. Since of that, I’m often working downstairs in the apartment,” Simoon explained. “We often hear: ‘We’ve never been on vacation with our child before.’ And then they’re here. Because it feels safe.”
More than a year later, the family’s dream appears to be taking shape. According to the family, rentals are going well, with occupancy around 70 percent. “We are incredibly happy about that,” they said, adding that bookings are already confirmed through the end of the year.
However, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In early November 2025, the family faced a setback when Arrie tore his Achilles tendon. He required surgery and then weeks of dealing with a poorly healing wound.
The recovery process temporarily halted many plans, causing delays in renovations and disrupting their usual pace. “That was frustrating, because sitting still isn’t for us.”
Despite the obstacles, Simoon and Arrie remain undeterred. They are now gradually resuming their plans and continuing to build their dream in Spain. And despite the setbacks, one thing remains clear for the family: their guest house has become exactly what they envisioned. “We feel at home here. Completely satisfied.”
