Pokémon cards are fetching prices typically reserved for used cars at an event in Breda, Netherlands, this weekend. The Europe Collectors Festival is celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Pokémon Company with rare cards selling for as much as €21,000 (approximately $22,700 USD).

Visitors to the event at Breepark can buy, sell, and trade cards, alongside other trading cards, collectibles, and retro games. The surge in value reflects a broader trend of collectibles becoming alternative investment assets, fueled by nostalgia and scarcity.

A Card Worth Thousands
A card with a price tag of €21,000 is the centerpiece of the festival, displayed under glass. Gioachino Koopmans, the card’s owner, explained, “Some people have too much money, some just want it for their collection, and some are investing in it.” He added, “Today it’s worth €21,000, but who knows what it will be worth in five years?”

Koopmans has experience with high-value trades, having previously sold cards totaling €63,000 (approximately $68,000 USD) in a single transaction. However, he is primarily at the festival to acquire more cards, aiming to purchase them “as expensively as possible.”

Celebrity Sales Drive Demand
Pokémon expert Jeffry van Geel attributes the high prices to a combination of the franchise’s enduring popularity and limited availability. “The franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and has remained relevant,” he said. Increased attention from high-profile figures has also played a role; influencer Logan Paul’s sale of a rare card for nearly $14 million worldwide generated significant buzz and further fueled interest.

The value of a card is primarily determined by its rarity and condition. Cards are assessed by official grading services. “A card with the highest score, PSA 10, and a low print run can be worth thousands of euros,” Van Geel explained.

As an example, he cited the Pikachu Van Gogh card, which was exclusively available at the Van Gogh Museum and is now offered for between €1,500 and €2,000 (approximately $1,620 – $2,160 USD), as reported by Omroep Brabant.

Appealing to Collectors and Families
The event isn’t solely focused on top-tier prices. Approximately thirty vendors are offering cards at more accessible price points, with some selling for just a few euros. Toinne and Sharon van de burg reported selling the most expensive card for around €85 (approximately $92 USD), focusing on affordable options for children and smaller collections.

The festival attracts a diverse audience, including parents with children, dedicated collectors, and investors. One attendee, Evert, spent €65 (approximately $70 USD) on two cards to complete his sets, stating, “€21,000? That’s far too much for me.”

Daphne, who purchased two Japanese Pikachu cards for €7 (approximately $7.50 USD), also prefers to stay within a lower price range. “That kind of money just takes the fun out of it for me.”

Risks in a High-Value Market
The high stakes of the market also bring risks. Sellers warn of a significant number of counterfeit cards in circulation, advising buyers to exercise caution. “Where there’s money, there are also people without a love for the hobby,” Sharon said.

The Europe Collectors Festival continues through Sunday, February 22nd.
