Update: This story has been updated.

A rockslide has closed a section of E6 near Rosten in Sel, Norway, late Wednesday evening, disrupting travel in the region. The closure is expected to last through the night.

“The road will not reopen tonight,” officials stated on X.

— Large Boulders

According to traffic operator Barbro Evensen Venhagen with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the slide wasn’t particularly wide.

“We’re talking about fairly large rocks, and it’s difficult to witness what the situation is like up in the terrain,” she told GD. “the road is closed pending light and a geologist.”

The geologist is expected to arrive around 8:00 a.m. Thursday, according to information provided to GD around 12:30 a.m.

Truck Struck

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration received the first report of the slide at 10:45 p.m. From a truck driver.

Initial reports indicated no one was hit by the rocks, but the truck driver who first alerted authorities has since reported that his vehicle was struck by some of the debris. The truck sustained damage as a result of the rockslide.

The damage appears to be limited to property.

“The truck sustained some damage to the grill and a few dents,” Evensen Venhagen told GD.

Police are on scene to assist with traffic control. Shortly after the road was closed, several trucks were stranded on both sides of the slide.

Turning the trucks around will present a challenge, and police will demand to guide each vehicle southward along E6 to allow for a safe turnaround. The incident is expected to cause significant traffic delays.

Motorists are being detoured through Østerdalen, meaning those stopped near Rosten will need to travel to Hamar to continue north.
