Earth’s Age & Evolution: Darwin, Islam & the Origins of Life

Scientists have established a timeline for the age of Earth by measuring radioactive elements in rocks from our planet and other parts of the solar system.

The Earth is estimated to be 4.54 billion years ancient, and over that vast period, continents have formed and disappeared, ice ages have expanded and contracted, and life has evolved from single-celled organisms to complex creatures like the blue whale. Understanding this history provides crucial context for studying the planet’s current state and potential future.

The theory of evolution through natural selection was first outlined by Charles Darwin in his 1859 book, “On the Origin of Species.” Darwin explained that organisms evolve over generations through the inheritance of physical or behavioral traits. His perform stemmed from observations of variations within populations, such as the different beak shapes of Galapagos finches.

Darwin termed this process “natural selection,” where the environment drives the selection, not humans. Natural selection can cause small changes in a species, leading to shifts in color or size over several generations.

Given enough time and accumulated changes, natural selection can result in entirely new species, a process known as macroevolution. This long-term process transformed dinosaurs into birds, amphibians into whales, and ape ancestors into humans, chimpanzees, and gorillas.

Alongside Darwin, French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck proposed that organisms could pass on characteristics acquired during their lifetime to their offspring. Similar to Darwin, Lamarck believed organisms adapted to their environments and inherited those adaptations.

Lamarck argued that organisms adapted by changing their behaviors, and these adapted traits were then passed down.

For example, Lamarck theorized that giraffes initially had short necks, but as trees grew taller, they stretched their necks to reach the leaves, and their descendants gradually evolved longer necks.

Religious Perspectives on the Theory of Evolution

The development of evolutionary theory has prompted strong reactions from many religious adherents. Some view the theory as conflicting with religious teachings that state a divine being created the Earth and all living things.

For instance, some Christians believe the Bible indicates humans were created on the sixth day of creation, not over millions of years. Others interpret the seven days of creation described in the Bible as representing long periods of time.

Some Christians find the theory of evolution acceptable, believing that God oversaw this natural process and created both the natural world and everything within it. They see all things as planned and designed by God, with every change representing a direct act of creation.

For some Hindus, the theory of evolution is problematic because they believe the god Vishnu plays a role in evolution rather than allowing it to occur naturally, which contradicts Hindu creation stories.

However, many Hindus do not object to the theory of evolution, believing that Brahman created life on Earth and Vishnu preserves it. Evolution is then seen as one way of preserving life.

In Islam, some Muslims struggle with the idea of humans being subject to the same laws of natural selection as other species, as the Quran teaches that humans have a special role and oversight in creation.

Other Muslims view evolution as the means by which Allah SWT created life, believing that Allah created the conditions that drive evolution and oversees the natural processes through which species evolve. (Live Science/BBC/Z-2)
