EasyJet: Lighter Seats to Save 40,000 Tons of CO₂ & Add Legroom

easyJet anticipates the latest seating will contribute to an annual CO₂ saving of up to 40,000 tonnes.

easyJet is set to introduce a new generation of ultra-lightweight passenger seats on its future aircraft, offering increased legroom of up to 2 inches (5 centimeters). The seats, manufactured by British firm Mirus Aircraft Seating, are part of the airline’s ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.

The new Kestrel seats will be installed on Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft as part of an order covering up to 237 planes, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. This represents one of the largest single orders for aircraft seats in history, according to the airline.

Beyond the added legroom, the low-cost carrier promises passengers enhanced travel comfort. The seats are designed to be more than 20% lighter than current models. For Airbus A321neo aircraft, the new seats could result in a weight saving of up to 500 kg per aircraft, equating to an annual fuel saving of over 12,900 tonnes and approximately 40,500 tonnes of CO₂.

“Thanks to a simple design, low maintenance requirements and the use of recyclable materials, they are expected to have a longer service life and a reduced environmental impact,” easyJet stated in a press release.

easyJet says the Kestrel seats are the lightest in their class, designed for short and medium-haul routes. The increased legroom is achieved without altering seat pitch, thanks to an ergonomic design. A specific, pre-reclined structure of 22 degrees is intended to improve comfort and provide more space for knees, and shins.

“easyJet is likewise continuing with other measures to reduce aircraft weight, such as the introduction of lighter coatings or the digitisation of onboard documentation. The aim is to gradually reduce fuel consumption and emissions through a combination of small but cumulatively significant measures,” the airline stated, adding that it is striving to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
