Diana Salazar Méndez, Ecuador’s ambassador to Argentina, is prioritizing strengthened bilateral ties with Buenos Aires, particularly in areas of security and trade, nearly a year after taking up her post. The former Ecuadorian prosecutor’s appointment reflects a broader effort by President Daniel Noboa to address security concerns and boost economic cooperation within the region.
Salazar, who served as Ecuador’s Attorney General from April 8, 2019, until May 21, 2025, discussed her experiences transitioning to a diplomatic role and her vision for Ecuador’s future in an interview with El Universo. She highlighted the importance of recognizing the contributions of the Ecuadorian community in Argentina, which numbers around 30,000 people, according to official data.
“This change has meant, above all, a professional challenge,” Salazar said. “And personally, changing countries, likewise assuming new functions has been part of a learning process that has strengthened my skills, especially to serve the country, always putting into practice the vocation for public service that has characterized us.”
She noted that Ecuador has a “great opportunity” in 2026, with potential advancements in security, education – particularly in artificial intelligence and literacy – and increased trade and tourism. Salazar expressed her desire to continue representing Ecuador on the international stage.
The Ecuadorian community in Argentina is making significant contributions across various sectors, including health, education, the arts and gastronomy, Salazar explained. She cited examples such as the Ecuadorian director of the Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra, a drone designer and builder, and a jewelry designer, emphasizing the talent within the community.
Regarding diplomatic priorities, Salazar stated that strengthening political, commercial, and cultural ties between Ecuador and Argentina is paramount. A visit by President Daniel Noboa in 2025 bolstered cooperation, particularly in security, with the signing of several agreements with Argentine ministries focused on security, financial intelligence, anti-corruption efforts, and the public prosecutor’s office.
Salazar aims to address the trade imbalance between the two countries, with a goal of achieving parity. In 2025, Ecuador secured market access for avocados and red pitahaya, and she sees potential for increased exports of cacao, coffee, and processed food products.
Cooperation in combating organized crime is also a key focus. Salazar highlighted the importance of international collaboration and the strengthening of relationships with Argentine security officials through the exchange of best practices and information. Discussions are underway regarding a new extradition treaty, replacing a 1933 agreement, to streamline the process of extraditing individuals wanted for prosecution in either country.
Currently, five extradition cases are pending, with two appealed to the Argentine Supreme Court of Justice. Salazar emphasized that extradition processes are the sole responsibility of the Argentine judicial branch.
Another priority for the embassy is establishing a cooperation mechanism in cybersecurity and cyberdefense, given the evolving threats facing both nations. Ecuador was recently recognized as a top tourist destination for 2026, including the Galapagos Islands, and Salazar is working to promote Ecuador’s tourism sector in Argentina.
Efforts are also underway to increase direct flights between Ecuador and Argentina, with discussions held with airlines like JetSmart. Argentina’s open skies policy provides opportunities for expanded air travel options.
