Popular drinking coconuts are currently affected by a recall due to potential health risks associated with consumption of the refreshing fruit.

Munich – On warm days, few things are more refreshing than cool coconut water straight from the fruit – a touch of vacation on the supermarket shelf. Yet, consumers who recently purchased such a coconut at Edeka or Marktkauf should exercise caution – and refrain from consuming the product.

The retail chain initiated a public recall on March 4, 2026. Several varieties of drinking coconuts are affected: “Bio Trink-Kokosnuss DRINK & EAT,” “Trink-Kokosnuss DRINK & EAT,” and “Bio Chiquita Trink-Kokosnuss.” All originate from supplier World’s Coconut Trading SL. Previously, the Tübingen district office had issued a warning about a honey paste.

Recall at Edeka and Marktkauf: These Coconuts are Affected

According to the portal lebensmittelwarnung.de, all batches are affected. No information is available regarding best-before dates. “The recall applies exclusively to drinking coconuts from supplier World’s Coconut Trading SL with a banderole and a straw,” Edeka stated in a release. Other coconut products are considered safe for consumption.

Key facts about the warning at a glance:

  • Product: Bio Trink-Kokosnuss DRINK & EAT / Trink-Kokosnuss DRINK & EAT / Bio Chiquita Trink-Kokosnuss
  • Identification feature: Drinking coconuts with a banderole and straw from supplier World’s Coconut Trading SL
  • Supplier: World’s Coconut Trading SL
  • Distributor: EDEKA ZENTRALE Stiftung & Co. KG

The products were sold in Edeka and Marktkauf stores and, according to lebensmittelwarnung.de, were distributed nationwide. The affected items have reportedly already been removed from shelves. This comes as caution is also advised regarding spice mixtures from a well-known brand.

Coconut Recall, Mold Toxins as Trigger: Edeka Urges Against Consumption

The recall is triggered by a mold toxin (mycotoxin) that, according to Edeka, “could have formed in a few drinking coconuts in a limited number of stores due to possible overexposure.” “Consumers are strongly advised against consuming the drinking coconuts. Those affected should consult their doctor if they experience any symptoms,” the retailer warned. Customers who purchased an affected item can return it to the respective point of sale without a receipt.

Mycotoxins are natural metabolites produced by molds and can be harmful to health even in the smallest amounts. As the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) explains, mold toxins can cause various illnesses in humans, including diarrhea and vomiting. Kidney and liver damage, as well as a weakened immune system, are also possible consequences. Importantly, mycotoxins cannot be destroyed by cooking or heating.

In Germany, a recall is required when a food poses a health risk. The manufacturer is legally obligated to initiate the recall if they identify a hazard, according to the Product Safety Act. The online portal lebensmittelwarnung.de publishes recalls from the states and the federal government. If the manufacturer does not recall the product, the authorities will inform consumers.

The return of food products is only mandatory if they are unsuitable for consumption or can cause damage to health. In the case of pure quality defects, it is merely customer service if the product can be returned. Recalls also occur frequently without public knowledge. If a company identifies defects before the launch of a product, it can withdraw the affected product from the market. This avoids damage to its image.

As the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) explains, they arise “under unfavorable conditions in food and feed already in the field or during storage, transport and processing.” People with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, the elderly, and children are particularly at risk, as their organisms are more sensitive to harmful substances. The BfR provides comprehensive information on mold toxins in food. (Sources: lebensmittelwarnung.de, produktwarnung.eu, Edeka release, BfR, LGL) (jm)
