A young man at the center of a disturbing assault case in Egypt is receiving mental health care after reportedly attempting suicide multiple times, his attorney said. The case, which gained attention after the victim was forced to wear women’s clothing and was attacked in public, highlights the vulnerability of individuals facing harassment and violence.
Attorney Sfeian Ahmed Selim said his client, identified as Islam, was hospitalized after experiencing severe distress. He was initially admitted to Benha University Hospital before being transferred to a psychiatric hospital in Benha for ongoing care and treatment, according to Selim.
“The victim has attempted suicide more than once due to the severe psychological shock he experienced,” Selim stated.
Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal in Tanta has scheduled an urgent hearing for February 22 to try six defendants before the Benha Criminal Court. The defendants are accused of kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, indecent assault, and violating the victim’s privacy in the case known in the media as the “Miet Asim” incident.
