Egypt & Turkey Travel: Safety Concerns for Lithuanians?

Concerns over regional stability are prompting travelers to reassess vacation plans in Egypt and Turkey, though experts say cancellations are not yet widespread. The situation comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent exchanges of rockets between Iran and Israel, leading to airspace closures and flight cancellations.

Despite the unrest, travel experts are urging a rational approach, noting that popular tourist destinations are often located far from conflict zones. They also emphasize the added security guarantees offered when booking through licensed tour operators, according to a press release.

“People often think that it’s better to buy nothing during a period of uncertainty, but in practice, most trips go ahead as planned,” said Brigita Kučinskaitė, an expert at “Kelionių akademija.” “The tourism sector is very flexible and able to react quickly to changing situations, so travelers shouldn’t rush to cancel plans just since of headlines.”

Kučinskaitė stressed the importance of choosing reputable travel providers. “The biggest protection for a traveler is a travel contract with a licensed tour operator. This means that the organizer, not the traveler, is responsible for organizing the trip and any related situations,” she explained.

Travelers considering a trip to Egypt are being advised to exercise caution. While popular Red Sea resorts like Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam and Hurghada are currently considered safe by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, travelers should remain aware that the situation could change rapidly. The UK government advises against travel within 20 kilometers of the Egypt-Libya border and North Sinai, which borders Israel, and also warns against travel into the Western Desert. 15min.lt reports that the increased tension in the region due to the conflict could disrupt travel plans.

Recent events have already impacted some travelers. One Lithuanian tourist was reportedly surprised by a travel agency’s response after canceling a trip to Egypt due to safety concerns, Lrytas.lt reported. Another traveler expressed frustration at not receiving a refund for a canceled trip, according to the same report.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued specific recommendations against travel to any countries, Delfi reported. The development underscores the growing need for travelers to stay informed about evolving geopolitical risks and to carefully consider their options when planning international travel.

Despite the current climate, Turkey remains a popular destination for Lithuanian tourists, according to Lrytas.lt.
