Culiacán, Sinaloa – Authorities briefly detained Mónica Zambada Niebla, the daughter of alleged drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, during a security operation in the El Salado community south of Culiacán on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The incident underscores the ongoing efforts to disrupt the operations of the Sinaloa Cartel.

According to reports, the operation, led by the Secretariat of the Navy and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, began around 3:00 a.m. Local time, establishing a security perimeter around the rural area. While initial reports indicated her arrest, Zambada Niebla was released shortly after, according to multiple news sources including Periodicocorreo and OEM.

Her husband, whose identity remains unknown, was transported by helicopter to a penitentiary center. Heraldo de México reports that Zambada Niebla was born on March 2, 1980, in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

Mónica Zambada Niebla is the daughter of Ismael Zambada García, known as “El Mayo,” and Rosario Niebla Cardoza. She is one of five children from that marriage, including María Teresa, Midiam Patricia, Jesús Vicente, known as “El Vicentillo,” and Modesta Zambada Niebla. She studied Business Administration at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa.

Authorities in the United States previously included Zambada Niebla and some of her sisters in investigations related to alleged financial operations linked to drug trafficking, with accusations of owning companies used for money laundering in 2007. The case highlights the continued scrutiny of the Zambada family’s financial dealings. OEM details her family history and education.

The operation in El Salado follows reports of federal deployments and at least two other detentions in the area, as reported by Quadratín México and El Universal.
