Elijah Wood, best known for his iconic role as Frodo Baggins, says he wouldn’t seek anyone else to take on the part while he’s still able to play it. The actor shared his thoughts in a recent interview with The Times.
Two New Films on the Horizon
A return to Middle-earth may be closer than fans think, as filmmaker Peter Jackson is assembling the original cast for two new films that will expand upon the storylines of both the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies.
The films will be produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema, and are titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum in the original films, is set to direct.
The first film is slated for a late 2027 release and will, according to Deadline, explore the events that transpired between the conclusion of “The Hobbit” and the beginning of “The Fellowship of the Ring.”
Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are similarly returning to write the screenplay alongside Peter Jackson.
Excited for a Return
Wood noted that Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in all six films, has already hinted at the films to fans at the For The Love Of Fantasy convention in London last August.

The veteran actor also revealed that filming is expected to begin in May – and that both he and Wood are slated to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Frodo, respectively. McKellen also intends to continue playing Gandalf, a decision Wood fully supports.
“I can say that I’m excited about the possibility of a new film. It really feels like getting the band back together,” Wood elaborated to The Times. The news is sure to delight fans of the beloved fantasy franchise, which continues to resonate with audiences decades after its initial release.
