Emergency Room Overload: When to Seek Urgent Care

Emergency rooms are increasingly being used as routine care facilities, leading to longer wait times and potential risks for patients needing immediate attention, according to recent observations. The trend is straining resources and impacting the ability of hospitals to effectively respond to critical cases.

“Access to Emergency Care is Becoming More Tricky”

Dr. Sedat Özbay, an Emergency Medicine Specialist, explained that a true emergency is defined as “a situation that endangers the patient’s life, requires extremely urgent medical intervention, and requires rapid diagnosis, and treatment.” He added, “This has been publicized for a long time. We also declare on all platforms how emergency services should be used and in what situations.” He emphasized that emergency departments should be reserved for life-threatening conditions such as traumas, cardiovascular failures, sudden loss of consciousness, chest pain, and heart attacks.

“Unfortunately, emergency services have started to be used as regular outpatient clinics recently, which has increased the patient load in the emergency department and made it more difficult for real emergency cases to reach the hospital or to benefit from the services in the emergency department,” Dr. Özbay stated. “This situation also leads to an unpredictable increase in workload in the emergency department, along with the risk of medical errors, the potential for physical violence, and burnout syndrome in healthcare personnel and physicians.”

The increased strain on emergency departments is also coinciding with a specific pattern of non-emergency visits. Dr. Özbay noted a rise in patients presenting with high blood pressure, blood sugar irregularities, and gastrointestinal issues – including indigestion, abdominal pain, and diarrhea – often following large meals after breaking the fast. This influx of less urgent cases further exacerbates the challenges faced by emergency medical teams.

The situation highlights the importance of appropriate healthcare utilization and the need for patients to understand when to seek emergency care versus scheduling an appointment with their primary care physician. Ensuring emergency rooms are available for those with life-threatening conditions is crucial for maintaining a functional and effective healthcare system.
