Italian Minister: Attack on Erbil Base Didn’t Result in Casualties
Italian military personnel stationed in Erbil, Iraq are safe following an attack on the base, according to Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The incident, confirmed by Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, occurred Thursday, March 12, 2026, and prompted immediate assessments of the situation.
“So far, we have received no reports of casualties, and we do not yet realize if the attack is ongoing. It is exceptionally difficult to determine that at this time,” Tajani stated on Rete 4. “However, we do know that all of our military personnel are safe, inside the bunker.”
The nature of the attack – whether directly targeting the Italian contingent or other units at the base – remains unclear. Tajani added that authorities are working to determine if the attack involved a missile launched by Iran or by Iran-backed militias. The base also houses American military personnel, adding to the complexity of the situation.
“” the Deputy Prime Minister continued, “it is a dangerous situation.”
The attack underscores the ongoing instability in the region and raises concerns about potential escalation. Italy maintains a military presence in Iraq as part of international efforts to counter terrorism and support the country’s security forces.
