Eric Dane, best known to audiences as “McSteamy” from Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eric Dane this afternoon, after a valiant battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement cited by CBS and other U.S. Media outlets on February 20.
Dane first revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Charcot’s disease, in 2025. Born in San Francisco, the actor began his television career with a 1991 guest appearance on Saved by the Bell. He gained widespread recognition in 2006 with his role as the charismatic surgeon Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, appearing in 139 episodes through 2021. He also starred in HBO’s drama series Euphoria, where he played Cal Jacobs. His passing marks a loss for fans of both medical dramas and prestige television.
