Evenepoel Crashes in Dramatic Finish to Stage 3 of Volta a Catalunya

Vila-Seca, Spain – A shocking crash in the final kilometer of Wednesday’s stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya saw Remco Evenepoel hit the pavement while battling for the win with Jonas Vingegaard, ultimately leading to a sprint finish won by Dorian Godon.

Evenepoel and Vingegaard had broken away from the peloton, appearing poised for a head-to-head duel to the finish line when the incident occurred. According to reports, Evenepoel lost control after hitting a pothole on a roundabout. “I wanted to get onto my drops and just at that moment there was a pothole that I didn’t see, that wasn’t marked,” Evenepoel explained to Sporza. “Then I lost my handlebars.”

The crash allowed the chasing pack to surge forward, with Dorian Godon taking advantage to secure his second stage victory of the week.

While Evenepoel was able to get back on his feet, he sustained visible injuries. “My elbow is hit quite hard, so we have to see what is and isn’t possible,” he said. “I’m in a bit of pain everywhere. My elbow is open, my back is open, and my hips are open.” The extent of his injuries and impact on his overall campaign remain uncertain.

The dramatic turn of events unfolded after a strategic move by Evenepoel and Vingegaard approximately 30 kilometers from the finish. The duo opened up a 20-second gap, capitalizing on a fractured peloton caused by strong winds. Evenepoel initially pushed the pace, with only Vingegaard able to stay with him, before the unfortunate crash in the final moments.

Vingegaard appeared to not capitalize on Evenepoel’s misfortune, continuing to ride at a steady pace as the peloton caught up. The incident has sparked discussion about rider safety and course markings.

This race is a key early-season event for many contenders hoping to peak for the major Grand Tours later in the year. Godon’s win adds another chapter to a thrilling Volta a Catalunya, while concerns linger over Evenepoel’s condition.
