Former Professional Baseball Player Arrested on Suspicion of Driving Under the Influence

A former professional baseball player, 51-year-old Shinobu Okamoto, was arrested on March 25, 2026, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The arrest occurred in Sendai, Japan, according to reports.

Okamoto, who previously played for the Chunichi Dragons, Seibu Lions, and Rakuten Golden Eagles, was taken into custody by the Sendai Kita Police Station. Authorities allege that Okamoto was driving a vehicle while intoxicated at approximately 8:25 a.m. Local time on March 25th.

The incident involved a collision with another vehicle that was stopped at a traffic signal. A 71-year-old male driver was reportedly rear-ended, but did not sustain any injuries. Following the collision, a breathalyzer test administered by police indicated that Okamoto’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit. He has reportedly admitted to the charges.

Okamoto enjoyed a successful career as a relief pitcher, winning the Most Valuable Relief Pitcher award in 2004 while playing for the Chunichi Dragons. After his time with Chunichi, he played for the Seibu Lions from 2008 to 2009, where he became known as part of a group of pitchers affectionately nicknamed “our guys” by fans. He later played for the LG Twins in Korea and the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles before retiring in 2011.

Following his retirement from professional baseball, Okamoto transitioned into a career in the food service industry and likewise served as a baseball commentator for Tohoku Broadcasting Corporation (tbc).

Driving under the influence remains a significant public health concern, contributing to a substantial number of traffic accidents and injuries worldwide. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with impaired driving and the importance of responsible behavior.
