Formula 1 enters a fresh era this season with sweeping changes to engines, aerodynamics, chassis, fuel, tires, and race tactics. As the 22 drivers prepare to compete in the first of 24 Grand Prix races on Sunday, March 8th, in Melbourne, Australia, predicting a favorite is a challenge given the scale of the overhaul.
“Everything is new. There’s no comparison possible with the previous generation of cars. For the teams, the learning curve is so steep that it will seize months to get a clear picture,” explains David Sanchez, Technical Director of the Alpine team. “The extent of the changes is such that the races will grow much more unpredictable, at least during the first year of the regulations,” adds Bradley Lord, spokesperson for Mercedes and right-hand man to Toto Wolff, the team’s boss.
