Playground Games‘ reimagining of the beloved Fable franchise is generating excitement among fans of the original games, with a planned release this fall. Recent comments from Game Director Ralph Fulton, shared in an interview with Xbox Wire and further detailed during a Developer Direct livestream, suggest the studio is approaching the reboot with a delicate balance: honoring the series’ legacy while forging a distinct identity separate from the work of the original developer, Lionhead Studios. The game will launch on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and will be available too Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers from day one.
A reboot of the beloved RPG series Fable is in development at Playground Games, bringing a fresh take to the classic franchise originally created by Lionhead Studios. The revival aims to capture the spirit of the originals while offering a modern gaming experience.

Developers are prioritizing the elements that made the original Fable games so popular – its signature dry British humor, picturesque environments, and a complex moral system that allows for player agency. The new installment will feature seamless integration of new locations with familiar settings, offering an open world experience where players can explore freely without being constrained by a linear narrative.
A New Approach
In an interview with Xbox Wire, Game Director Ralph Fulton explained Playground Games’ approach to the Fable legacy. While the studio intends to reboot the original trilogy, Fulton emphasized that they aren’t aiming to simply recreate it. “We are not Lionhead – We can’t make a Lionhead game.” This signals a desire to honor the past while forging a new path for the franchise.
Whether Fable will be a success when it launches this fall remains to be seen, and a precise release date has not yet been announced. However, the game will be available from day one with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. PlayStation and PC gamers will also be able to experience the reboot, as Fable is slated for a cross-platform release alongside the Xbox Series X/S.
