Fallout Project Canceled at Xbox Game Studios – Report

A Fallout game previously in development at an Xbox-owned studio has reportedly been canceled, according to game journalist Jeff Gerstmann. The information surfaced on “The Jeff Gerstmann Show” podcast, where he stated he believes the project “is no longer going to see the light of day.”

Gerstmann did not disclose which studio was leading the development, though speculation points to possibilities such as Obsidian Entertainment or InXile Entertainment, both part of the Xbox Game Studios ecosystem. The cancellation does not appear to be related to rumored remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: Latest Vegas, which have reportedly leaked and remain potential announcements.

According to Gerstmann, Bethesda intends to consolidate future development of its core franchises in-house. This strategy suggests that upcoming Fallout and The Elder Scrolls titles will be directly overseen by Bethesda Game Studios, with the studio expanding its team as needed, rather than delegating work to other studios within Xbox Game Studios. This move reflects a desire for tighter control over these flagship IPs.

Bethesda’s current priorities are The Elder Scrolls VI and ongoing updates for Starfield. Still, reports surfaced last summer indicating that Fallout 5 had received the green light, reportedly coinciding with the cancellation of Project Blackbird, an unannounced MMO from ZeniMax Online Studios.
