A 43-year-old father has been arrested after authorities discovered he allegedly kept his 9-year-old son imprisoned in a delivery van for more than a year in eastern France. The discovery, made in the village of Hagenbach in the Alsace region, has sparked outrage over the extreme conditions in which the child was held.
A Grueling Discovery
Police officers discovered the boy on the courtyard of an apartment complex where the father lived. According to prosecutors, the child was found naked, severely malnourished, and lying in a fetal position under a blanket, surrounded by excrement. The prolonged confinement had a devastating physical impact; officials stated the boy was no longer capable of walking when he was rescued.
The child was immediately transported to a clinic in Mulhouse for medical treatment. Details provided by the prosecutor’s office reveal a harrowing level of neglect: the boy had not showered since late 2024 and was forced to use plastic bottles for urine and trash bags for bowel movements. His only belongings were a backpack containing some clothing.
Deception and Surveillance
The rescue followed reports from neighbors who had repeatedly heard suspicious noises coming from the parked van. When questioned, the father dismissed the sounds, claiming there was a cat inside the vehicle. It was only after a specific report regarding the sound of a child that police moved to break into the van on the evening of April 10, 2026.
Investigation revealed that the father had installed a video camera to monitor the delivery van while it remained in the courtyard. The father has since confessed to the crime.
Motivations and Arrests
The father’s partner was likewise arrested in connection with the case. During questioning, the boy reported significant conflict with the partner, who allegedly did not want him in the apartment and had pushed for him to be admitted to a psychiatric clinic. According to reports, the father imprisoned the child in the van specifically to avoid this institutionalization.
The investigation is ongoing, and a formal criminal proceeding has been initiated. The case underscores the critical role of community vigilance in identifying child abuse, and neglect. Two daughters, aged 10 and 12, also lived in the apartment with the couple.
