A father-son cricket duo has etched their names into the record books, combining for an astonishing 590-run partnership in an Adelaide and Suburban Association Cricket match on Saturday. The incredible feat, achieved for the Coromandel Cricket Club against Morphettville Park, has quickly gone viral across social media.

Darren Cheek, 63, and his son Sam, 38, were at the crease for the entirety of the 40-over innings, delivering a performance that stunned onlookers and left the opposition reeling. This remarkable partnership unfolded at the Ascot Park primary school oval.

Sam Cheek was the dominant force with the bat, finishing with an unbeaten 402 runs off just 137 balls. His explosive innings included a remarkable 42 sixes and 30 fours. Darren Cheek provided a steady hand, contributing 175 not out from 108 deliveries. The pair’s combined effort resulted in a final score of 0/590, a world-record wicket stand for a 40-over match.

“We knew that we had to have a big win and we had to gain a big percentage quotient on our ladder to get up into the final,” Darren explained. “So we went out with the mindset that we got to go hard early.”

The innings almost came to an abrupt complete early on when Sam was dropped on a duck, with the fielder unfortunately struck in the head as the catch slipped through his fingers. This proved to be a pivotal moment, launching one of the most memorable individual performances in amateur cricket history.

“Fortunately, the first couple of overs I was hitting them well and hitting the middle. It was a short boundary down straight, so my favourite shot is driving and even lofted drive, so I started off well, but Sam was in all sorts at the beginning,” Darren said.

Morphettville Park struggled to contain the onslaught, eventually posting 146-3 in their reply, resulting in a massive 444-run defeat. The dominant victory significantly boosts Coromandel Valley Cricket Club’s chances in the league standings.

The story takes on an added layer of significance for Darren Cheek, who recalled a memorable match against the same opponent in 1996. “I’ll never forget the time I hit 184 against Morphettville Park – not for the century, but for the joy of hearing my nine-year-aged son Sam cheering excitedly for me from the sidelines.”

The duo’s incredible partnership wasn’t limited to batting, as they also opened the bowling for Coromandel after their lengthy stint at the crease.

The opposition captain showed great sportsmanship, leading his team in a guard of honor as Darren and Sam walked off the field. “I can’t speak more highly of how good they were in their sportsmanship and their captain just kept pumping their players up, just saying, ‘approach on, Here’s cricket.’ They fought it out the whole day,” Darren said.

For Darren, who has been a member of the Coromandel Cricket Club since 1983, the opportunity to share this moment with his son is particularly special. “It’s 30 years later and I’m having the joy of being with [Sam] and having the joy of seeing him, doing these remarkable things, so it was pretty special.” He also shared that his two grandsons, ages four and six, were on the sidelines cheering them on.

“My goal is to still strive and preserve playing until the oldest [grandson] … until I can play a game with him,” Darren added.
