Tight Away Defeat for Vienna Against FC Liefering
In the 19th round of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga, Vienna traveled to face FC Liefering. In a largely balanced match, Liefering secured a decisive goal and ultimately won 1-0.
Following a recent snowfall at the Hohe Warte, Vienna’s journey took them to Salzburg for a Friday evening clash against FC Liefering in the 19th round of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga. Manager Hans Kleer fielded the same starting eleven that had impressed in their previous match against title contenders St. Pölten.
Intense Start and High Pressing
Both teams began the match with energy, employing a high press to win possession early. This resulted in a fast-paced, combative encounter, though clear-cut chances were initially scarce.
Woodwork Denies Early Vienna Lead
Vienna created the first major opportunity in the 17th minute. Luxbacher played a precise pass to Zimmermann, who unleashed a powerful shot that Liefering goalkeeper Zawieschitzky tipped onto the crossbar. Minutes later, the hosts also came close when Camara hit the post after a well-worked combination play.
Defensive Phase Before Halftime
After these brief attacking spells, the game settled into a more cautious rhythm. Both sides defended resolutely, limiting opportunities for further scoring chances. Camara had one final attempt with a long-range shot just before halftime, but it sailed over the bar.
Goalless at the Break
The first half ended without a goal. Vienna remained defensively solid but struggled to create openings in the opposing half. The teams headed into the interval tied at 0-0.
Liefering made one substitution at the start of the second half, with Masching replacing Sulzbacher. The second period began similarly to the first, with Vienna maintaining a stable defense but finding it demanding to threaten offensively.
Double Substitution for Vienna
In the 58th minute, Vienna made two changes. Nagele came on for Seo and Max Mergner made his competitive debut for the club, replacing Kai Stratznig. The substitutions injected more attacking intent into Vienna’s play, allowing them to establish a foothold in the opponent’s half.
Liefering Breaks the Deadlock
The Liefering manager responded with a double substitution of his own, bringing on Alexander Murillo and Johannes Moser. This change proved decisive. In the 72nd minute, Moser played a through ball to Murillo, who calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Vienna Pushes for an Equalizer
Hans Kleer reacted to the setback with another double substitution, introducing offensive players Zeidler and Monschein in an attempt to discover a late equalizer. Prohart and Odagaki made way for the fresh legs.
Vienna threw everything forward in the closing minutes, but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Liefering successfully defended their lead and secured a narrow 1-0 victory.
