Ferrari’s ‘Macarena’ Wing: China GP Update & Analysis

The Ferrari team generated significant buzz leading up to the Chinese Grand Prix weekend with speculation surrounding a potentially innovative rear wing design. Reports indicated the Scuderia may have brought the so-called “Macarena wing” to Shanghai, hoping to gain a competitive edge in speed.

The unique rear wing, which rotates up to 270 degrees in Straight Mode, initially turned heads during winter testing in Bahrain. Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton utilized the “flip-flop” component during the first practice session. However, the wing was removed from both cars before the sprint qualifying session.

Hamilton and Leclerc will revert to a ‘conventional’ wing setup for both sprint qualifying and the sprint race. It remains to be seen whether Ferrari will reintroduce the innovative design for the main Grand Prix race, and if the potential performance gains will outweigh any drawbacks. This development comes at a crucial stage in the season as teams continue to refine their setups for optimal performance.
