Vlaanderen is poised to overhaul its vehicle inspection system, offering drivers more options and potentially lower costs. The reforms, approved by the Flemish government, will allow motorists to get their cars inspected at recognized garages in addition to traditional inspection centers.
The move aims to break the monopoly currently held by existing inspection centers and increase competition, ultimately benefiting consumers. Under the new system, pricing will become variable within a set range, rather than fixed, further encouraging competition. The changes are expected to address long wait times and concerns about the quality and transparency of the current inspection process.
“The keuringmarkt [vehicle inspection market] is a closed market where the current keurcentra [inspection centers] have a monopoly,” said Flemish Minister of Mobility, Annick De Ridder. “Garages could not enter. With this reform, we desire to allow garages to play their role in inspections and eliminate unnecessary rules.”
To ensure objectivity, garages will not be permitted to inspect vehicles they have recently serviced. “The garagist who works on your car will not be the one who subsequently inspects it,” De Ridder emphasized. The reforms similarly include the elimination of second-hand vehicle inspections.
These changes represent a significant shift in how vehicle inspections are handled in the region, and could lead to greater convenience and affordability for car owners. The phased implementation of the new rules is already underway, with further adjustments expected in the coming years. More details on the reforms are available here.
The overhaul comes after years of frustration with the existing system, which has been criticized for its lengthy wait times and lack of transparency. The move underscores the government’s commitment to improving services for citizens and fostering a more competitive market.
