Flamengo officials, led by club president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, joined forces with the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and other key figures to lobby lawmakers in Brasília for a reversal of recent tax penalties impacting sports organizations. The delegation sought to protect the financial stability of clubs that support Olympic sports in Brazil.
The group’s efforts included a meeting with Zico, a legendary figure in Brazilian soccer and former Minister of Sport, who emphasized that supporting athletics is a national priority, transcending individual administrations. His presence underscored the broad appeal and importance of the cause.
Following discussions with the Sports Committee in the Chamber of Deputies, representatives met with Randolfe Rodrigues, the government leader in Congress, and the Senate’s opposition leader. A potential agreement emerged to vote on overturning the veto, with plans to introduce a Constitutional Amendment (PEC) guaranteeing tax immunity for non-profit sporting activities.
The delegation also received a hearing with Gleisi Hoffmann, Minister of Institutional Relations for the Presidency, who pledged to present the issue to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Hoffmann affirmed the federal government’s commitment to Brazilian sports.
The core objective of this lobbying effort is to secure legal certainty and financial sustainability for clubs that develop athletes, maintain social programs, and reinvest all resources back into the country. This is crucial for the continued growth of Brazilian athletics.
The mobilization is ongoing, with further action expected as the legislative process unfolds.
