Former Ecuador World Cup Veteran Christian Lara Arrested in Attempted Armed Robbery
Former Ecuadorian international Christian “El Diablito” Lara, a standout midfielder from the nation’s 2006 World Cup squad, was apprehended by police on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, during a failed armed robbery at a technology store in Quito.
The incident took place in the south of the capital, specifically in the La Villaflora area. According to Colonel Pablo Lastra, chief of the Eloy Alfaro District, approximately six armed individuals stormed the electronics establishment with the intent to steal high-value merchandise. The heist was thwarted when a team of police officers on motorcycles intercepted the group during their attempted escape, neutralizing four of the suspects.
Authorities allege that the 45-year-old Lara served as the getaway driver for the criminal organization. Reports indicate that Lara remained in a vehicle on Pedro Vicente Maldonado street, near the El Recreo sector, although his accomplices entered the store to seize laptops and cell phones. While the attempted robbery resulted in the recovery of several electronic items, the suspect now faces serious legal repercussions.
Colonel Lastra noted that while Lara has no prior criminal record, the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) and judicial authorities will now determine his exact level of involvement and presumption of guilt in the crime. This sudden legal battle marks a stark contrast to the heights of Lara’s athletic career.
Known affectionately as “El Diablito,” Lara remains a celebrated figure in Ecuadorian football history. He is remembered for scoring one of the goals in Ecuador’s historic 2005 victory over Argentina during the World Cup qualifiers and for representing the “Tri” at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. His domestic success was equally impressive. he won league titles with El Nacional in 2005 and Liga de Quito in 2007 and 2010. During his tenure with Liga de Quito, Lara also captured the 2009 Copa Sudamericana and two Recopa Sudamericana titles in 2009 and 2010.
After a career that included stints with Barcelona de Guayaquil and international experience with Dorados de Sinaloa in Mexico, Lara retired from professional football in 2018. The fall from grace for the former star serves as a shocking development for the sporting community in Ecuador.
